Designation Pyu Lake, Myanmar’s seventh “Ramsar Site” and eighth “EAA Flyway Network Site

The Pyu Lake is located at Pyu Kan village in Tada-U township, Mandalay Region and a permanent waterbody which is largely fed with water from the upstream Kinda dam on Pang Laung river. The habitats of Pyu lake function is of vital role for one percent the global population of Baer’s Pochard (CR) and 3 percent of Common Pochard (VU) and other migratory diving duck speciesdue to their abundance food of aquatic invertebrates such as worms, molluscs and crustaceans, as well as the high population of Common Coot (Fulica atra). Total of 28 fish species are found in Pyu Lake.

The Pyu Lake can be stored water with 234 ha (578.2 acres) from the Kinda Dam and supplied water up to 4000 acres for agriculture at seven irrigated villages in Tada U township in Mandalay region. Therefore, both EAAF Secretaries and Ramsar Secreataries have designated as global flyway network site (East Asian Australasian Flyway Network Site – no. 155) on 16 November 2023 and the international importance wetlands (Ramsar site – no. 2533) on 2 February 2024. The Incredible that Pyu Lake’s ecosystem services meet under the Ramsar criteria (1, 2 & 4) caused by providing the threatened ecological communities to rare diving duck species, fish and other aquatic invertebrates species and supporting the principle water to improve the agriculture and communities living standards.
