(KBAs) and (IBAs)

Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) and Important Birds and Biodiversity Area (IBAs)

  • Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) are ‘sites that contribute to the global persistence of biodiversity’, including vital habitat for threatened plant and animal species in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems.
  • Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) are KBAs identified for birds using internationally agreed criteria applied locally by BirdLife Partners and experts.

Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) are:

  • Places of international significance for the conservation of birds and other biodiversity
  • Recognized world-wide as practical tools for conservation
  • Distinct areas amenable to practical conservation action
  • Identified using robust, standardized criteria
  • Sites that together form part of a wider integrated approach to the conservation and sustainable use of the natural environment

Myanmar has 132 KBAs and 57 IBAs.
